Guide: Engraving Mirrored Acrylic

Engraving mirrored acrylic is a fantastic way to create high-end signage, cake toppers, and decor. To get that professional "crystal clear" look on your Neon, you need to follow a specific workflow.

1. Engrave from the Back (Reverse Side)

The most important rule for mirrored acrylic is to engrave on the gray/painted back side, not the front.

  • Why? If you engrave the front (the shiny side), the mirror layer will reflect the engraving, creating a "double image" or shadow effect that looks blurry.
  • The Result: By engraving the back, the laser removes the reflective coating, leaving a clean, frosted look that is visible through the acrylic from the front.

2. Mirror Your Design

Since you are engraving on the back of the material to be viewed from the front, you must Mirror (Flip Horizontally) your design in Neon Studio before starting.

  1. Select your text or logo.
  2. Click the Horizontal Flip icon in the toolbar.
  3. Note: If you forget this step, your text will appear backward when you look at the finished piece from the front!

3. High Resolution Setting

For mirrored materials, the detail is everything.

  • Setup: Go to the Settings (⚙️) in the top right corner of Neon Studio.
  • Resolution: Change the Fill Resolution to High.
  • Important: This setting resets to "Medium" whenever you restart the software, so remember to check it before every mirrored project.

4. Power Management: "Less is More"

When engraving the mirror backing, you only want to remove the thin reflective layer. You should not melt deep into the acrylic.

  • High Power: Causes the acrylic to melt and bubble, leading to a distorted, "melted" look.
  • Low Power: Safely removes the paint/foil layer, resulting in a crisp, sharp frost effect.
  • Recommendation: Perform a small test. Usually, a lower power setting with a moderate speed yields the most elegant results.

Pro Tip: Back-Filling with Color

Once you have engraved the back of the mirrored acrylic, you can spray paint the engraved area. The paint will only stick to the parts where the laser removed the mirror coating. This allows you to create mirrored signs with colored text (e.g., Gold mirror with Red text)!
