Reducing Charring and Burn Marks on Laser Cuts¶
Achieving a clean, professional finish without dark burn marks (charring) is a common goal, especially when working with organic materials like MDF, plywood, or solid wood. This guide provides a simple yet effective technique to protect your material surfaces.
The Solution: Masking Tape (Crepe Tape)¶
The "burnt" look on the edges of your cuts is often caused by smoke and resin condensing back onto the surface of the material during the laser process. Applying a layer of high-quality masking tape acts as a sacrificial barrier, absorbing these residues.
How to Apply the Masking Technique:¶
- Preparation: Before placing the material in the Neon, apply a layer of masking tape over the area to be cut or engraved.
- Smooth it out: Ensure the tape is flat against the surface with no air bubbles, as these can catch fire or distort the laser focus.
- The Process: Run your project as usual. The laser will cut through the tape and the material simultaneously.
- Removal: Once the job is finished, simply peel off the tape to reveal a clean, mark-free surface.
Pro Tips for a Perfect Finish¶
Tip 1: Tape Width Matters¶
Using wide masking tape (e.g., 50mm or 100mm) is much more efficient. You can cover the required area in just one or two strips, reducing the time spent on preparation and minimizing the number of seams.
Tip 2: Target the Work Area¶
You don't need to cover the entire sheet of material. If you are engraving a small logo in the center of a large board, apply the tape only over the specific area where the laser will be active.
Tip 3: Adjust Air Assist¶
Ensure your Neon's Air Assist is functioning correctly. A strong flow of air helps blow smoke away from the cut line, further reducing charring when combined with the masking tape.
Post-Processing
For any remaining light marks, a quick wipe with a damp cloth or a light sanding with high-grit sandpaper will leave your Neon projects looking flawless.
