FreeCAD vs. SolidWorks: Choosing Your CAD Path¶
Mastering 3D Modeling is the most empowering step you can take in your DIY journey. Before you can print, mill, or laser-cut a part, you must first translate the idea from your mind into a digital, mathematically precise format.

Why We Teach Both¶
When stepping into Digital Fabrication, makers often face a rigid choice between expensive proprietary software and free tools. We believe in providing both perspectives. By learning an industrial standard alongside an open-source powerhouse, you gain the skills to adapt to any environment, bridging the gap between heavy industry and desktop manufacturing.
SolidWorks: The Industrial Rigor¶
SolidWorks is the undisputed heavyweight in the mechanical engineering industry. * The Strengths: It offers an incredibly polished user interface, highly robust assembly management, and advanced simulation tools. It teaches you strict, professional design methodologies. * The Maker's Challenge: The cost is often prohibitive for hobbyists, and you do not own the software. If your license expires, your access to your proprietary files is restricted.
FreeCAD: The Maker's Freedom¶
FreeCAD is the ultimate tool for Open Source Fabrication. * The Strengths: It is 100% free, runs locally, and you own your files forever. Its parametric engine is highly capable, and it is endlessly expandable via Python macros written by the community. * The Maker's Challenge: The interface can feel less intuitive initially, and certain workflows require a deeper understanding of how the software calculates geometry.
Explore Beyond the Core: While our curriculum focuses heavily on FreeCAD and SolidWorks, the CAD landscape is vast. As you grow, you might explore Fusion 360 for cloud-based collaboration, Onshape for browser-based modeling, or even Blender for organic, non-parametric sculpting. The engineering principles you learn here will seamlessly transfer to any of these platforms.
Practical Workflow: Designing a Simple Bracket¶
To understand the difference in philosophy, let's look at how both programs handle the creation of a simple L-bracket with a mounting hole.
1. The 2D Sketch Phase¶
- SolidWorks: You select a plane, enter sketch mode, and draw a rough 'L' shape. The Smart Dimension tool quickly locks the lines into place. The solver is highly forgiving and automatically adds logical constraints (like making lines horizontal).
- FreeCAD: Using the Part Design workbench, you create a sketch. You must be much more deliberate with your constraints (horizontal, vertical, coincident). FreeCAD forces you to think like a mathematician, which ultimately makes you a more disciplined and structured designer.
2. The 3D Extrusion¶
- SolidWorks: You exit the sketch and select Extruded Boss/Base. A visual drag-arrow allows you to pull the 3D shape out dynamically, or you can type the exact thickness.
- FreeCAD: You use the Pad tool. The operation is strictly numerical; you enter the thickness in the dialog box. It is straightforward, highly reliable, and firmly parametric.
3. Parametric Modifications (The Hole)¶
- SolidWorks: To add a mounting hole, you use the Hole Wizard, which contains an entire library of standardized industrial threads (M3, M4, etc.) and automatically calculates the correct countersink depths.
- FreeCAD: You sketch a circle on the face of the bracket and use the Pocket tool to cut through, or use the dedicated Hole tool for threaded specifications. While not as visually flashy as the Hole Wizard, it provides absolute control over the geometry.
The Verdict¶
There is no "wrong" choice. If your goal is to land a job in traditional mechanical engineering, learning SolidWorks is essential. However, if your goal is absolute freedom, self-reliance, and building your own desktop factory without subscription fees, FreeCAD is the ultimate weapon.
